I was in the 7th grade and Andy Griffith had just finished a movie entitled "Onionhead". In it, he was in the Navy and had his head shaved, hence the nickname. I went to the barber and asked for a "GI haircut". I didn't have a clue what that was but it sounded cool at the time. Next day at school, I became the overnight sensation, "Onionhead", Onion for short.
In the 9th grade, I had the head coach, Coach Taylor, for Civics class. Mom was giving herself a home permanent. I had beautiful natural platinum blonde hair at the time. Mom thought it would be cool to give a me a few pin curls at the front of my head with her permanent solution. It worked way too good! Coach Taylor nicknamed me "Curly Top" until the curls grew out (or I cut them out). LOL
