names

When I was in the Air Force, as was the case in all the services, troops were identified by their last name by the other troops. This resulted in some odd nicknames. In my case, Vincent came Vince or Vinnie. Additionally, I had a name that could be used forwards or backwards: Gregory Vincent or Vincent Gregory, works either way.

When I met, and subsequently married my ex-wife, we were were both in the service so she called me by my last name like everyone else. After we were discharged, she continued using my last name. This was fine by me as I was used to it. HOWEVER, my parents were not impressed. They let her know, in no uncertain terms, that my name was Greg(ory) not Vincent. Problem was, she chose to ignore the advice, bad move (LOL).

I mentioned this little story because I was wondering if Aaron is experiencing the same thing in the Marines or with his hashing buddies. I suspect he is, as all service personnel usually do.

My Dad, Louie, has the same first name as his Dad, so he ending up being called Son or Sonny Man by everyone in Lincoln when he was growing up. I can recall him being called that by the older folks when I was growing up as well.

What about you?
